Summer flower arranging course

This short course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience.

So, whether you’re trying flower arranging for the first time or have done some before and want to brush up your skills – this could be just what you’re looking for.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Balance and proportion in floral designs
  • Conditioning of flowers and foliage
  • Using the colour wheel

Find out how to arrange a selection of seasonal flowers creatively, all under the watchful eye of professional florist and experienced tutor, Rebecca Newell.

Framework knitting, revolt and Nottingham Castle

Are you interested in finding out about some local history in Nottingham?

Are you curious about the development of framework knitting, particularly in relation to the museum in Ruddington?

This short course offers a chance to look into the development of framework knitting, the growth of Chartism and the fight for early reform in Nottingham during the first part of the nineteenth century.

Visits to the Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington and Nottingham Castle on 30 April and 14 May are planned as part of the course.

Short course in Indian head, arm and hand massage in Stapleford

Indian Head Massage imageA new short course in Indian head, arm and hand massage is coming to The Helpful Bureau in Stapleford.

Starting in May, this 5 week course will introduce the basic techniques of Indian head, arm and hand massage in a friendly and supportive environment.

Students will also gain a basic understanding of the relevant muscle groups relating to these massages and by the end of the course students will be able to confidently perform an Indian head, arm or hand massage on friends and family.

The theory behind the massage techniques will be covered and the majority of the course will be practice based.

No prior knowledge is required. During the course students will practice massage techniques on each other. It may be necessary to wear a vest top or a top with loose fitting sleeves for some of the practical sessions.

Drawing techniques course in Nottingham

If so, this short course delivered by experienced WEA tutor, Margot Shores, might be just what you’re looking for.

It will offer a chance to explore different drawing techniques, starting with broken line drawing and leading into a series of sessions that will focus on a variety of drawing styles. Students will be encouraged to express themselves through their artwork making full use of art materials they may already have in order to keep costs down.

Come and learn the skills needed to arrange flowers creatively and how to make and create your own designs.

A boost for micro businesses in Nottingham

Business imageA series of 5 business booster modules are due to be delivered in Nottingham later this year.

The WEA will be offering the following stand alone modules:

  • Reaching Customers
  • IT for Micro Businesses
  • Communication Skills
  • Online for Business
  • Planning Growth

Each module will consist of 3 half-day sessions which will take place once a week for three weeks. You can enrol for all five modules or pick those that you feel your small business could benefit from most.

Reaching Customers
This module aims to help you understand your market and your place within that market. It will also help you to understand your customers better; increase the effectiveness of your marketing and improve your marketing message.

IT for Micro Businesses
This module aims to help you to achieve greater confidence in purchasing and using IT equipment as well as identifying appropriate and cost effective software options to suit your business needs.

Communication Skills
This module aims to help you to develop a clearer understanding of the communication skills required to run a successful small business.

Online for Business
This module aims to help you to understand the purpose and function of websites and identify which are relevant to your business as well as being able to make an informed decision about whether to manage your own website yourself or have someone else do it for you. It will also look at the role of ‘Social Media’ and whether or not it is worth your investment.

Planning Growth
This module aims to help you with the longer term planning for the business in terms of planning growth, to assess the scalability of the business and ensure advance thinking informs future planning to scale up the size of the business, where appropriate.

Fees: The cost for one module is £36.75. If you book on more than one module you will pay the full price for the first module but will receive a 10% discount on any additional modules. If your household income is below £15,276 a year you may be able to apply for help with your fees – please get in touch to find out more about this.

Free craft sessions at Rumbletums Café in Kimberley

Rumbletums imageCoffee, cakes and crafts…

FREE drop-in craft sessions will be taking place on Tuesday’s at Rumbletums Café for four weeks in March.

You can come along any time between 10am and 12noon on 4, 11, 18 0r 25 March, treat yourself to coffee and a cake, and give some creative craft techniques a try with the help of our experienced tutor, Anne. Making your own greetings card, or re-discovering patchwork are just two of the creative crafts that will be on offer – so why not pop along to find out more?

There’s no need to book, you can just turn up and take advantage of these FREE drop-in sessions which are open to anyone.

If you like the idea of FREE drop-in sessions but aren’t so keen on crafts, tell us what other drop-in sessions you’d like to see running at the café as we’re really keen to run some more.
